48. I Am Free

Song I Am Free
Words & Melody by Liesel Rigsby
Harmonies by Patricia Norton
Lyrics
I am free, I am free, like the ocean I am free.
Free, I am free, I am free.

I am love, I am love, Lord fill me with your love.
Love, I am love, I am love.

I am light, I am light, yes, I am shining bright.
Light, I am light, I am light.

Notes: This is the first song Liesel wrote, on an island, starting the process of freeing her voice. What amazes me about this song, and keeps me coming back to it, is how good it feels to sing. From the opening jump of realization up to the word "free" to the rhythmic interplay that sets me swaying on the "love, I am love, I am love" line, the music and words strengthen each other. I added harmonies of my own, but you might choose different harmonies and end up with a very different kind of sound. I love how this song doesn't need complexity to be satisfying, and my focus is very quickly freed up to notice how my voice feels, how my body responds. Spacious and gracious -- and from my brief time with Liesel at a songleader workshop in 2019, I would say those are qualities of Liesel's as well.

Songwriter Info: Liesel describes herself as an intuitive relationship coach -- she is also an author, mother, spouse, and successful entrepreneur.... and a heart-centered, laughter-filled wise presence, with an amazing Parking Fairy song to find those elusive spaces! Liesel shares freely guided meditations on her soundcloud channel... check them out!

47. Shadow Listening

Song: Shadow Listening
Words & Music by Patricia Norton
Lyrics
Shadow of murmuring, spinning around.
Sun-dusted listening; feel my heartbeat sound.

I'm going back. I will catch you.
No need to fear now. I'll be your ground.

I can do this listening. I can do this healing.

Notes: I didn't actually write this as a community singing song; I wasn't expecting anyone else to want to sing it. I wrote it because I was finding a way to comfort and strengthen myself through the process of sorting old journals... being placed back in some difficult times, times when I wasn't really able to treat myself compassionately. Going over to the piano and creating this song helped me listen to and love my younger, struggling self -- I really felt like I was catching myself. I shared it with a dear friend, who responded so strongly and positively, I began to share it with others, including eventually my Pocket Song singers... and now here.... because it seems I'm not the only one who gets to go back and tender gentle care to a previous self...
So, you know how I say, "coming to you straight from my home in Vermont," with my voice just the way it is today? Well, I've got to admit with this episode, I fudged that... I couldn't loop the piano part (long story), so rather than record it live with my looper in one take, I had to layer the recordings to get you the whole song... which meant I could re-record when I didn't hit a note squarely in the middle, or squeaked or cracked. And it's still not perfect! Sigh.... I'm learning a lot from doing this podcast! Thanks for hanging out with me -- I hope this song can be a good companion to you, too.

46. We Are the Way

Song: We Are the Way
Words & Music by Christine Kick
Lyrics
Celebrate the difference,
celebrate the distance,
celebrate the love,
celebrate this brand new way!
We are the way, we are the way, we are the way!

All night and every day we bring the love,
we bring the love.

Notes: I came across We Are the Way in 2020 when I was joyfully listening through Annie Zylstra’s online collection in Heartland Harmony – if you love songs and haven’t found her library yet, you are in for a huge treat! Annie had this song, which lifted my heart and became a touchstone song for me in very short order. She explains that Christine Kick was living in her basement during a major home renovation that was taking longer than expected, and she found herself feeling a little shamefaced when friends would ask, “How’s it going?”, as it very much WASN’T… and then she reminded herself to celebrate the difference & distance she had come. We’ve just moved out of our home for 22 years to a new community, we’re unpacking boxes, searching for things in new places, slowly starting to meet new people… I am using this reminder on the regular!

No junk -- I will never sell your address. I read out all your names into my living room when I send new mailings... I appreciate the connection to you who are listening and singing these songs with me.

Songwriter Info: Christine has been writing songs ever since she was a kid, growing up singing in choirs, and playing flute, guitar, piano, hand drums, etc. She wrote We Are the Way in 2016. She teaches yoga as a way to harness more energy for life by overcoming our limitations and fears - energy that can then be applied to any passion or pursuit that fills us up! Christine believes that music is medicine, especially singing since it opens the throat chakra which allows energy to flow. Her mission is to inspire others to live their best life possible and show up for their heart's true calling.... and music is part of and parcel of who she is and what she does. When we connected for permission for me to use this song, she was in Costa Rica travelling, and sharing songs. Christine enjoys leading and hosting song circles, kirtans, and music jams.

36. Brighter Days

Song Brighter Days
Words & Music by Jennifer Cook
Lyrics
There's so much hope in a snowdrop,
the promise of spring to come.
Hold on, hold on
through the cold,
brighter days will come.

Notes: Whether or not you have snowdrops blooming right now, who doesn't recognize the promise we sometimes can sense in a bloom? The cycle of blooming, falling, disintegrating, resting, reforming, growing, blooming... this song has a beautiful criss-cross of lines, so the first line burrows into the second line, while the second line starts low and grounded, then rises hopefully above the first. The third line lets you sing out a sort of commentary and affirmation of the first two. I take time teaching the first part, especially, so you can feel really confident as the song develops...

I appreciate the connection to you who are listening and singing these songs with me.

Songwriter Info: Jenny is a community singing leader and songwriter with a passion for using song to bring joy and build communities and friendships. She runs a-cappella harmony singing groups in Knaresborough and has two young children aged 7 and 4. She also writes beautiful, soulful and easy to teach songs often inspired by and celebrating her love of nature.

34. Possibility

Song Possibility
Words & Music by Lisa Forkish
Lyrics
An end is not the end, it can be the beginning.

Like a river, I flow.

I am open to all the possibility.
Notes: I love a layer song which gives me options -- what do I feel like singing? Is singing low and warm feeling yummy? Or floating high? Or getting snuggled in the middle of a set of harmonies? Lisa Forkish's "Possibility" song offers all those choices, starting with a low, potentially gritty, determined line that says "An end is not THE end -- it can be the beginning." Then a fluid river line that requires some release to sing, as it flows among notes. Finally, when singing about being open, there is an amazing note on the word "open" that moves the whole song into a slightly unexpected place, giving a visceral experience of opening up to a different possibility. Love it. A song that helps me embody the knowledge of possibility that change brings.

No junk -- I will never sell your address. I read out all your names into my living room when I send new mailings... I appreciate the connection to you who are listening and singing these songs with me.

Songwriter Info: Lisa Forkish (she/they) is a queer singer-songwriter, community-builder, artivist, song-healer, and self-described "Love Warrior," infusing all she creates with fierce authenticity and heart. For the past 20 years, Lisa has been using song as both an expressive art and a tool for building connection. For Lisa, facilitating music spaces is much more than a job; it is a sacred calling. Lisa breathes humanity into their music and teaching with infectious joy and compassion, aiming to heal the wounds of music elitism and not-enoughness through an embodied, trauma-informed and heart-centered approach. For Lisa, Love is paramount and closeness is the antidote to cisheteropatriarchy, white supremacist delusion and cultural disconnection. Lisaʻs mission is to utilize music for personal and collective healing and liberation.

29. Hope Lingers On

Song Hope Lingers On
Words & Music by Lissa Schneckenburger
Lyrics

1. My mother, when love is gone (2x),
in our darkest hour, hope lingers on.
My father, when peace is gone (2x),
in our darkest hour, hope lingers on.

Chorus:
I will not hate, and I will not fear;
in our darkest hour, hope lingers here.

2. My sister, when equality’s gone…
My brother, with tolerance gone…

3. My love, when honor is gone…
My country, when justice is gone…

Notes: "Hope lingers on"... I love singing this to myself as a reminder that a pandemic is not the only thing lingering around. There are so many beautiful recordings of this piece online, I encourage you, like always, to use this podcast as a way to learn the song, and then if it speaks to you, follow the links and sing along with gorgeous professional recordings! Sometimes, honestly, it makes me uncomfortable to put my voice with loops out there when there are such polished renditions available (that honestly might sound better!) -- but then I remind myself that I'm not here performing for you... I'm here sharing a song that makes a difference to me when I sing it to myself -- and maybe it will do that for you, too? Planting songs for wellness...
Next week I'm hugely excited to share a songwriter conversation with the composer of this song, Lissa Schneckenburger. We talk about some of the differences between voice and violin as instruments, music as a way of distilling learning and helping heal from trauma, how not to lose heart as a change-maker, touring on a bicycle and more.

Songwriter Info: Lissa Schneckenburger is a fiddle player and singer whose roots are in folk music in Maine. She lives in Brattleboro, Vermont, now, and says, “To me, music creates community. Music is what people sing along to, dance to, fall in love to… music brings people together." Giving concerts on her own or as part of the trio, Low Lily, as well as supporting other musicians with practice challenges (and jokes) through her website, Lissa consistently does her part to build community. Her solo album, Thunder In My Arms, is a tender, powerful collection of songs about attachment, parenting, and trauma. We talk about its origin and development in the next episode's conversation.

24. My Song Is A Drop

Song My Song Is A Drop
Words and Music by Heidi McCurdy
Lyrics
Dm deh dm dm --- du-wah,  dm deh dm dm, --- du!

Spiralling out from the center.

My song is a drop in an ancient spring.
Reaching out with a resonating.
Bubbling up from a well within.
Turning round and back again.
Notes Heidi McCurdy used an ancient interval, the fifth, to create a song that invites awareness of resonation and connection across time and space. On the next episode, Heidi comes on A Breath of Song herself to share another song, and talk about her beginnings as a shy singer, experimenting in the car, what expressive arts therapy is, and how you might take a song and extend it further. I love the way this song invites me to turn inside and outside, to feel the inner resonation reaching out, for the song to be a drop and a bubble... and at the same time makes me smile with a little bit of a 50s-sounding riff!

11. Dust Dry

Song Dust Dry
Words & Music by Patricia Norton
Composed in 2020
Lyrics
Dust, dry, looking for *some water*;
Dust, dry, my soul.
Dust, dry, looking for *some water*;
Rain down on us all.
Us all.

*zipper song; you sing the words you want here.
If it's a single syllable, I often use the word "now" after to balance the rhythm.
If it's a two syllable word, I use "some" or "a" before it.
Some options: *a vision*, *some breath now*, *some justice*, *acceptance*, *some healing*
Notes: Written at a time when my soul felt dry and fragile in response to wildfires, drought, racial injustice, pandemic, climate and political crises... I needed a song that recognized how I felt, but could also call on hope, water, justice, breath, vision -- and a song I could bring to groups which could be quickly taught and singers could name what they wanted to call for themselves. I love the determination and sharpness I feel at the beginning, followed by a peaceful settling when the rain "falls down" on us all.

Check out the home page or the shownotes to Episode #10 to join the "in-group" that gets a colorful, thoughtful weekly email.

If you'd like to bring this song to your own groups, simply let me know at abreathofsong@gmail.com.

Nuts and Bolts: 4:4, Aeolian (natural minor) zipper song with body percussion.

10. I Trust My Roots with guest Samara Jade

Song I Trust My Roots
Music & Words by Samara Jade
Lyrics
Verse: (usually sing 2 verses, then chorus)
I trust my roots
*to know where to go*
 (3x)
I trust my roots
*to know where to go*
down, down into the earth.

Chorus:
Down, down into the earth,
intertwining with all beings,
I'm seeing in every direction;
going down, down into the earth,
I'll send a message on the world-wide-web of
interconnection.

Other verse options include:
*to anchor me deep*
*to reach what I need*
*to share what I got*
*to lead me to love*
*to connect us as one* ("our" roots)

Samara encourages songleaders to create their own verses to insert in between the **.

Notes  Samara Jade and I talk embodied intuition, the musical Rent, vocal health, names, mycelium, Moonshadow and trust... and Samara shares "I Trust My Roots". I sing along, periodically smudging the words, as I often do when I first learn a song (maybe you do, too?). A squidge of laughter, a dollop of wonder... it was a fabulous hour!

Music referenced in the show:
Cat Stevens, Moonshadow
the musical Rent by Jonathan Larson
Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon
singer/songwriter Johanna Warren

Songwriter Info A modern folk troubadour, Samara is dedicated to the art of listening deeply and crafting soul-centered songs that are medicine for the moment. Inspired greatly by the wild wisdom of nature and the landscape of the human psyche, her songs ride the crest of the unknown and balance between shadows and light.
Coming from a musical background as diverse as classical, jazz, folk, Broadway musical and progressive rock, Samara stitches together a unique tapestry of sounds with a quality of musicianship distinctly her own. As heart-opening as they are intellect-stimulating, A fan once coined the term "Philosopholk" to describe Samara's tunes, and no one has ever described it better in a one-word nutshell.
Samara lives in her van, Vincent VanGo, and is committed to sharing her song-beings around like thousands of spiraling maple helicopter seeds - which is, not coincidentally, what a samara is.

9. Right Place, Right Time

Song Right Place, Right Time
Words & Music by Samara Jade
Lyrics

1. I believe that I’m in the right place at the right time
This wave is crashing down and it’s the one for me to ride

2. Crazy world, crazy times
Gonna let go of what oughtta be
And hang on for the ride

3. Ebb and Flow
Rising Falling

Notes Lisa Littlebird shared that Samara wrote this in the Big Sur, after her first surfing lesson, and said it was a personal cure for FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). During the pandemic, I heard it differently, and it became my go-to song for letting go of what I wanted to be happening, and just riding the crazy times.

7. Spiral

Song Spiral
Music & Words Patricia Norton
Composed in 2020
Lyrics

I'm letting myself move in a spiral,
I'm flexing and I'm swaying and I'm bending with the wind.

I'm coming down to where I want to be.

Gotta let me grow, gotta let me grow,
you know.... I've got to grow.

Notes I wrote this song a few months into the pandemic, at a point when I was disappointed with how I seem to know all this wisdom in my head, but have so much trouble translating it into body knowledge... I was tearful & fearful – and so frustrated with myself. Then I realized – oh, right -- this what it feels like to grow! Moving from comfortable to uncomfortable in a spiral of growth. Which started me thinking about prairie grass – the beauty of acres of grasses swaying and moving in the wind. Roots in the dirt and touching the sky... both growing up and coming down. Natural patterns that occur and recur -- including the spiral.

You can learn more about me and what influences my choices and work here.
